Profile

Dr. Theekshana Pathirana is a specialist in Surgical Oncology with comprehensive training and experience in advanced cancer surgery, both in Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom. He is currently serving as a Consultant Oncosurgeon under the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka.

Dr. Pathirana completed his local surgical oncology training at Apeksha Hospital, National Cancer Institute, Maharagama, where he developed a strong foundation in the management of complex malignancies. His overseas training in the United Kingdom further expanded his clinical and surgical expertise across multiple subspecialties.

He underwent advanced fellowship training in Colorectal and Peritoneal Malignancy at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester—one of Europe’s foremost cancer centres. He then completed a dedicated fellowship in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery at University Hospitals Derby and Burton (UHDB), where he was subsequently appointed as a Locum Consultant Breast Surgeon. In addition, he undertook an honorary fellowship in Head and Neck Surgery at University Hospitals Birmingham.

During his time in the UK, Dr. Pathirana worked across more than 12 NHS hospitals, gaining extensive experience in emergency general surgery and acute surgical care, complementing his oncological practice. He had the opportunity to train under internationally renowned surgeons in breast, colorectal, peritoneal, and head and neck oncology, enhancing his multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment.With a career shaped by diverse clinical environments and mentorship from global leaders in surgical oncology, Dr. Theekshana Pathirana brings a high level of expertise and commitment to cancer surgery in Sri Lanka.
